Turnkey Radiotherapy Bunkers (LINAC)

We transform a bare space into a safe bunker, compliant with CNCAN.

Available configurations

Design, installation and certification for enclosures from any manufacturer.

Conventional LINAC Bunker

For standard-energy linear accelerators (up to 10 MV). Primary and secondary barriers of reinforced concrete, armored door and maze, sized in accordance with the workload and use/occupancy factors.
Suitable for: most radiotherapy centers and county hospitals.

High-Energy LINAC Bunker

For accelerators above 10 MV, which generate photoneutrons. We add neutron shielding with borated polyethylene (BPE) in the door and maze, on top of the concrete barrier.
Suitable for: 15-18 MV LINAC, oncology centers of excellence.

HDR Brachytherapy Room

Rooms for high-dose-rate brachytherapy (afterloader). Lower shielding, made of lead and/or concrete, with an armored door and an interlock system.
Suitable for: oncology clinics, hospitals with a brachytherapy department.

Compliance

An uncompromising barrier for high-energy radiation.

A radiotherapy bunker does not stop a field, it stops a high-energy beam. Here, the correct thickness of every surface matters, along with careful treatment of the access and the penetrations - any undersizing means a dose above the limit in neighboring spaces.

The radiation barrier:

  • Primary and secondary barriers: we size the primary barrier (the direct beam) and the secondary barriers (leakage and scattered radiation) separately, according to the beam energy, workload and the use (U) and occupancy (T) factors, in accordance with NCRP 151 and IAEA SRS-47.
  • Concrete and heavy shielding: the walls, ceiling and floor are made of reinforced concrete - or high-density concrete where the footprint is limited - with verified shielding continuity, with no uncontrolled joints.

The Access and the Penetration Points

  • Maze and shielded door: the maze path attenuates the scattered radiation before the entrance, and the motorized shielded door (lead and steel, with borated polyethylene at high energies) has an interlock linked to the console - the beam cannot start with the door open.
  • Penetrations and ventilation: the cables, medical gases and HVAC ducting cross the shielding through the maze, in the form of "Z-shaped" ducts, with no direct radiation paths; the ventilation is sized for the extraction of ozone.

Safety and handover in accordance with CNCAN
  • Safety system: "Beam On / Radiation Hazard" warning lights, emergency stops inside the enclosure and an interlock linked to the treatment console, integrated with the irradiation equipment.
  • "Last person out" procedure: An enclosure search system before irradiation, which enforces verification that no person has remained in the bunker before the beam is started.
  • Testing and handover: Handover takes place only after the final dosimetric measurements (radiation survey) at maximum load, with a report accepted by the medical physicist and in accordance with the CNCAN authorization.
